The Ice Factory of Central Florida
2010-2011 marks the eighth season in the exciting history of the Florida Women’s Hockey League. During 2002, women throughout the state began establishing teams and strengthening their organizations. Recognizing the opportunity to develop a statewide league where women’s ice hockey could thrive in competition and camaraderie, these organizations began reaching out to one another.
The result was the formation of the Florida Women’s Hockey League. The founding teams played their first official season in 2003-04. The original teams consisted of the Ft. Lauderdale Freeze (now the Palm Beach Hurricanes), the Ft. Lauderdale Express, the Jacksonville Breakers, the Brandon Ms. Conduct, the Tampa Blades, (now the Tampa Elite), the Ft. Myers Lady Everblades, the Orlando Sirens, and
the Daytona Rayz. Some highlights of the inaugural season were the playing of inter-league games, and the hosting of the Sunshine State Games.
The FWHL has experienced great growth in both size and strength since its birth. Notably during the 2004-05 season, the introduction of B-level division play and the hosting of the first FWHL/SAHOF championships were measurable successes of the league. The winners of the FWHL playoffs were the Florida Beaches B, the
Jacksonville Breakers C, and the MsConduct Rec teams. The SAHOF champions, the Florida Beaches B and the Lady Everblades C, represented the FWHL in the USA Hockey Southeastern District Championships.
Organizationally the 2005-2006 season produced exciting changes. The introduction of the tournament style of play, the formal formation of the Executive Board and the Board of Governors, and the introduction of league bylaws are a few worth mentioning. Competitively speaking, the Florida Beaches B and the Tampa Elite
C both represented the FWHL at the Southeastern Districts Championships, with the Tampa Elite C going on to the USA Hockey National Championships, becoming the second place women’s C division team in the nation!
Now in our eighth year, the FWHL is continuing in its mission to promote the growth of women’s ice hockey throughout Florida. However, the success of the FWHL would not be possible without the continued support of its sponsors, volunteers, and member players. The support of our sponsors adds an irreplaceable element to
the strengthening of our league. Individually each woman who volunteers her time and effort to the organizational duties adds to the progress of the league as well. Finally, and most importantly, each woman who offers her skill and dedication to playing hockey adds to the overall success of the league.
